Mishandling 'chauffeurgate'

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the mayor of Mexico City and prime candidate, according to the opinion polls, to win the presidency in 2006, had his first experience of media flak in January. The issue was the extravagant pay for Nicolás Mollinedo Bastra. AMLO claimed that Mollinedo was his head of logistics and so justified his M$62,000 (US$5,700) a month salary. AMLO's critics gleefully claimed that Mollinedo was just a jumped-up chauffeur and had the pictures to prove it.
